Summary:
Throughout history, the two major American political parties have differed on many important issues, including those such as abortion, the environment, and the nation's stance on Israel, among many other things. Each party has tendencies as to which side they usually take in the matter. Those in the Republican Party tend to form their opinions closer to more traditional values, most of which originate from the Bible. Democrats, on the other hand, often base their opinions off of more modern ideas, usually not derived from the Bible. America's stance on nearly all issues affects the whole world, due to the fact that America is the most powerful nation on the planet.
Abortion
Abortion remains one highly controversial topic that the Republicans and Democrats
debate fiercely. This topic began in 1973 with a court case that is known as
Roe vs. Wade. In the case, Roe,Norma McCorvey,
challenged Texas's laws that made abortion a crime, and Wade defended
the laws. The court ruled in favor of Roe, legalizing abortions. Ever since
that time, a great amount of controversy has developed over abortion. People
began asking questions such as "When does life begin?" and "Should a woman have
the right to choose whether or not an unborn child lives?" Most conservatives
do not support abortion, saying that an abortion is the murder of a child. Most
liberals state, however, that human life does not begin until the child leaves
the mother's womb, and therefore, an abortion is not a murder. From a Biblical
view (Ps. 139 and others), life begins at conception, not any later. The legalization
of abortions in the United States had a large effect on the world. Soon after
abortions became legal in the United States, several other countries followed
suit, including France in 1975, West Germany in 1976, New Zealand in 1977, Italy
in 1978, and the Netherlands in 1980.
Environment
Ever since early American history, environmentalists have worked to protect
what they saw as the endangered parts of our environment. Although resonable
efforts were made, those that hold the belief in macro evolution often put man's
needs on the same level as animals and demand unreasonable protections. It is
ironic that these are often the same voices calling for liberal access to abortion
in order to decrease man's impact on the enviorment. As with nearly every issue,
the Republicans and Democrats take up positions on opposing sides of this topic.
Democrats, for the most part, side with the environmentalists, fighting for
more regulations, such as laws to keep companies from polluting the environment,
or laws to prohibit tools or substances that may harm the environment. Republicans,
on the other hand, do not often side with the environmentalists. They advocate
fewer regulations, and less government control. As with many things, money remains
an incentive for those on both sides of the matter. With too many
regulations controlling the corporations, then the companies produce less cash,
thus potentially hurting the stocks of that company, possibly held by a person
against environmental regulations on that company. On the other hand, over-regulation
remains a problem as well. Those lobbying for more regulations on companies
often make the problem out as a global crisis, whether or not any truth lies
in that position. A single nation would find it difficult to solve a global
crisis by itself, thus the call for international agreements. Democrats tend
to play for the approval of other nations more than Republicans. A good balance
of regulations must maintained in order to keep companies profitable, and the
environment safe.
Israel
Often, both the Democrats and Republicans agree on the issue of
Israel. In 1948, at the end of World War II, the state of Israel first came
into existence. In the process of its formation, some land claimed by Arabs
became property of the Jews. Not a surprise to anyone, the Arabs did not like
this and rejected the UN partician. As soon as the fledgling democracy of the
Middle East declared statehood, the surrounding monarchs and dictators attacked.
Support from the USA has been strong and bi-partisian. For once, the Republicans
and Democrats continue to take the same side of this issue. Traditionally the
Democrats have received a large part of the Jewish vote, though in recent times
the Jews have seen that their interests are more aligned with the Republicans
(particularly when the PLO endorsed Kerry for president). Because of the support
the United States has given to Israel, many Arabs in the Middle East have a
hatred for America and rejoiced at the 9/11 attack.
Because of America's strong influence on world politics, and the polarized differences between the Republicans and Democrats, Americans display a keen interest in an election year, This can be particularly bitter when Biblical issues such as abortion, homosexuality, and support for Israel are at stake between liberals and conservatives.
